Admissions

Applications are available to families from October through May. Student candidates and their families who complete all parts of the application process are considered for the new academic year beginning with two weeks of summer orientation in August.

Interested candidates must meet the following criteria for consideration:

  • qualify for free- or reduced- lunch, with proof of family income
  • be likely to enter sixth, seventh, or eighth grade at his or her current school

Applicants must then do/complete the following:

  • submit a completed admissions application, which includes a written statement from the parent or guardian and a written statement from the student candidate
  • submit a copy of each of the following documents - the student candidate’s birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, most recent report card, standardized test, and two letters of recommendation
  • attend a full-day visit at our school
  • complete an interview with our director of admissions
  • complete an in-house admissions exam (i.e., school-administered and school-scored).

Admissions decisions are made by a committee of full-time faculty, under the guidance of our director of admissions, with all components of a student candidate’s application considered.

For more information on admissions, please contact Mr. Arturo Solis, Director of Admissions, at 619-544-9455, x 233, or by e-mail at asolis@nativityprep.org.

To determine if a child is eligible for free- or reduced-lunch, we use the current year Free- and Reduced-Lunch Eligibility Guidelines for San Diego City Schools; to determine if a child is in good standing and likely to complete his or her current grade, we ask for the most recent report card, for letters of recommendation from two different teachers, and the most recent standardized test scores from the candidate’s previous school.

In addition to the requirement of a family’s eligibility for free- or reduced-lunch, we look primarily for commitment and motivation on the part of the family and the student candidate. The student candidate’s academic standing and achievement are considered but not emphasized.

We notify parents and guardians and student candidates of acceptance toward the end of May. Once students are accepted, our director of admissions visits the student’s home to sign a one-year contract and to review the Parent-Student Handbook. In the summer, new sixth-grade students are required to attend a two-week summer orientation. New or returning rising seventh and eighth graders are required to attend the full five-week summer semester.
