University of San Diego

Since we opened in 2001, the University of San Diego (USD) has remained a significant source of ongoing support for our school. The current Dean of USD's School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES), Dr. Paula Cordeiro, is a former member of our school's Board of Trustees and now serves in the role of consultant for our school. Two former Trustees at the University also served as founding Board members and founding benefactors for our school. The former Provost for USD, Dr. Frank Lazarus, was instrumental in helping to write our very first formal grant proposal, in 2000, a year before our school opened.

The former Director of Assessment for SOLES, Dr. Linda Siefert, also served as a school Trustee for five years—ending her term at the end of the 2007-2008 academic year—and as Board committee chair for Academic and Student Affairs, working directly with our school's principal. Dr. Sandy Buczinski, Associate Professor for the SOLES Math, Science, and Technology Education Program at USD, currently serves as a member of our Board of Trustees.

USD has also maintained for the past eight years, since our school opened in 2001, an agreement to subsidize more than 60% of the tuition costs for any of our beginning AmeriCorps teachers to earn a single-subject teaching credential. The University's proximity also allows our students and teachers to occasionally visit the campus for a variety of events.

For the past two years, our partnership with USD has extended as well to the Hahn School of Nursing. Students in USD's esteemed graduate nursing program work weekly on-site, part-time, to assist in assuring student vaccinations and medical records are up-to-date, to perform vision screening for students, and to provide health-education seminars for students.
